Mapping Educational Attainment, Health Outcomes, & Urbanicity
Research Methods and R Programming Course Project — Parsons School of Design, The New School
Fall 2023The assignment was to pick any topic, source and process data on the subject, and create a research report in the form of an RPub notebook.
Using R Programming, I accessed data from the 2017-2021 American Community Survey, the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates database, the 2021 New York County Health Rankings Data from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, and the 2021 County-Level Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from the New York State Department of Health data portal. Using this data, I sought to explore the relationship between educational attainment and health outcomes in New York, factoring in the urban and rural contexts of the different counties across the state. I was particularly interested in whether a county’s urbanicity would have any effect on the well-documented relationship between educational attainment and health outcomes, and if so, I was curious as to any potential commonalities along the types of health outcomes for which urbanicity would be a strong confounding factor.
