Bushwick Housing Research & Tenant Toolkit
in partnership with Bushwick Housing Independence Project (BHIP),
Design & Urban Ecologies Studio II — Parsons School of Design, The New School
Spring 2024After working with Bushwick Housing Independence Project for about seven weeks, my cohort and I developed a booklet focused on the research we’d done up to that point on the historical and social context of Bushwick as a neighorhood as well as the state of its housing conditions. While my cohort and I collaborated on the toolkit as a whole, we also had particular sections which we each focused on. I worked specifically on the following sections: Historical Context, Ethnic & Racial Composition, Educational Attainment, Responses from Radical Listening Exercise, and mapping efforts throughout the booklet.
After the first research phase, we continued working with BHIP to develop a project proposal based on the organization’s most pressing needs. This ultimately resulted in us building the Tenant Toolbox, a resource to be hosted on BHIP’s website which consolidates the most crucial information on housing conditions in NYC, particularly in the context of a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. While my cohort and I collaborated on the toolkit as a whole, we also had individual sections for which we were each responsible. My section is Section 05 on Predatory Landlords and Tenant Harassment.
